We all want to get healthy and stay healthy to make sure we’re around for a long time to enjoy life’s experiences, like watching our kids blossom into adults and growing old with our partners. Here, Healthy Life Doctor™ and three times Chiropractor of the Year, Dr Ari Diskin, asks the important questions about your health.

Have you ever heard of healthy people suddenly dropping dead?
Well, you thought they were healthy because they looked and acted as though they had “no health issues”. But can you feel your arteries clogging, your bones becoming brittle, your teeth decaying, cancer growing or diabetes developing? Could it be possible that your external physical appearance and how you “feel” may not be an accurate measure or true reflection of your actual state of health?

Let’s consider what health really is.
Is health simply the absence of perceived illness or disease? If you are not bleeding, not in pain, seem to be able to walk and talk and function, does that qualify you as “healthy”? If your blood pressure, pulse, temperature body weight and other similar “measures” are within “normal” limits (also known as average), are you considered “healthy”?

Do you experience mechanical failure or driver error?
It’s been estimated that 98% of us are born with healthy bodies. That only leaves 2% of us with legitimate excuses for why we may not be operating and therefore living optimally. So why is it that more than 2% of us are not 100% healthy and well? Just like you can buy a perfectly good car and have problems with its performance due to the way you drive or handle it, your body can also suffer this fate as the result of life driver or operator error. If you don’t use and care for your body correctly, it is likely to not perform optimally for you, just as with a car or other mechanical item. The difference is, if your car wears out prematurely due to driver neglect or abuse, you can buy another, however if your body wears out (even with the possibility of replacing parts like your heart or hips), where are you going to live?

It’s been estimated that up to 95% of all illness experienced today is lifestyle related. This startling statistic is actually good news, confirming how important your lifestyle choices are and how much input you actually have in relation to your health. This also means that making small but significant changes to your lifestyle choices, like how and what you consume, and how much you move and think, is likely to significantly impact the degree to which you can be healthy.

What influences your degree of health?
There are the obvious considerations of what you eat and drink, how you move and exercise, how you use your mind and focus your thoughts, the air you breath, exposure to sunshine, and all your other life environmental factors. Interestingly, all these impact on your key body system, the one that controls and coordinates all your other body systems. Your “nerve system”, which is known as your master control system, is made up of a network of nerve fibres similar to an electrical wiring system. Interference in your spine may alter the transmission of the messages between your brain (at the top end of your spine) and any of your body's muscles, organs and tissues, affecting control and coordination of systems and function throughout your body. The purpose of your nerve system is to connect your communication network between your brain to all these other areas of your body, to facilitate optimal control and co-ordination with the goal of maximising your health and life performance and potential. Having a clear and uninterrupted nerve system and flexible, unstressed spine affects how you perceive the world, helping you to adapt to life and its ongoing challenging physical, chemical and emotional stresses.

What can you do for your health?
In broad terms, there are three types of care you can choose from. These include “self care”, “health care” and “crisis care”.

Self care includes what you do for yourself on a day to day basis, like what and when you eat, how and when you exercise, your dental hygiene practices, the bed you sleep in, how you sleep on it and how much rest you get. Plus, your mental attitude and influences  (positive or negative), who you socialise with and how much air and sunshine you enjoy and so on.

Health care generally describes the professional care you seek and cannot self-administer. This includes attending health care experts who specialise in particular areas and approaches including naturopaths to assess your need for supplementation, optometrists to examine your eyes and prescribe corrective lenses, dentists to examine your teeth and perform maintenance and repairs, medical doctors to diagnose and give treatments for particular ailments and symptoms and so on. Doctors of Chiropractic take a holistic approach to your body and mind, on the understanding that your nerve system must be optimally functioning without interference for you to be at your best physically, emotionally and mentally.

However you decide to attend to your self care and health care, crisis care is the type of care that most health-seeking people strive to avoid. Crisis care is for the sudden onset or awareness of a critical condition, like stroke, heart attack, accident injury, poisoning or diagnosis of life threatening disease.

What gets in the way of your ability to live a life without limits?
The ultimate cause of a limited (less than 100% healthy) life is INTERFERENCE. This is commonly known as stress. Stress on your master control system comes from a combination of three sources –
physical stress, chemical stress and emotional stress.

Self Care meets Health Care.
